What are you in for
Watch the adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s play Salome like never before as it turns the tale on its head, placing the female protagonist at the centre of desire that has no limits. This taboo-breaking opera by Richard Strauss explores the outer edges of human behaviour. The music is ravishing as well as repellant, augmented by an enormous orchestra with organs, harps and celestas.
The plot revolves around Salome, the stepdaughter of King Herod, who has become obsessed with her father’s prisoner John the Baptist. What follows is a provocative narrative of Salome’s quest to win her reward. Director Gale Edwards brings this gripping production on the Opera stage with Lisa Lindstrom playing the role of Salome.
The opera is performed in German with surtitle screens above the stage that translate the words into English.
Note: Salome contains nudity, and the characters depict and make reference to sexual violence.

Check your phone and other electronic devices, and anything else that might go beep or ring or buzz: make sure they are all off. A glowing screen can also be distracting to those around you so don't check your phone during the performance.
Photography, sound recording or any kind of filming is not permitted during the performance but you're welcome to take photos before and after the performance and at interval.
It’s a lot of fun to put on your glamorous best for a night at the opera, but casual dress is perfectly acceptable. There’s no compulsory dress code – wear what you’ll feel comfortable in. It can get cold in the theater, so consider an extra layer.
